If you’re into recycling and your community offers different ways to do the job, you might have a lot of different materials you’re having to store. You’ve got to hold onto things until the pickup comes, or until you can load everything up and take it where it needs to go. Most cities have certain categories of recyclables they’ll take, but most often it needs to be categorized in some way. If you need easy ways to organize all that recycling, here are a few ideas.
1. Create a Dedicated Space
A free wall in the garage, utility room, or mud room can act as the perfect spot for your home’s recycling center. Set up stackable bins and clearly label them as to what goes inside.
2. Tuck it in a Corner
Plastic bins with hinged lids from IKEA can be had for cheap. They stack well, so you can tuck them all into a corner of the kitchen or mud room. These make it easy to separate items and stow them out of sight until they’re full.
3. Wall O’ Plastic Totes
With some simple wood cuts and screws, you can create racks that let you hang large plastic totes on a wall. This is the ideal solution for recycling (and a lot of other stuff) you want to keep out of the way in the garage. Hang one for paper, one for plastic, and another for glass. Problem solved!
4. DIY Stackables
If cheap is your thing, simply get some plastic totes and cut a large opening in one end for easy sorting. Put the lids on and stack them anywhere. Cute labels not your thing? Grab a Sharpie and write what goes in each one.
5. Just Bag It
Don’t “bag” your recycling efforts, but use those square, standing bags to sort it all out. All you need is a shelf and a bag for each category. Then when you haul stuff away, you just grab them and go.
