When you find a great-fitting bra, you want to keep it as long as possible. Part of keeping your bras fitting well and lasting as long as possible lies in how you care for them. Surprisingly, a lot of women simply don’t know how to care for their bras, or they don’t think they are hurting anything by throwing them in the wash with everything else. If you want to keep your bras clean and in good shape, here are some tips to care for them properly.
1. Never Wear it Two Consecutive Days
One rule of thumb is to never wear the same bra two days in a row. Why? Because letting it rest for a day can let it get its elasticity back, prolonging its life. This is why it’s best to have several bras in your inventory so you can rotate them and not have to wash them as often.
2. How to Wash
The best way to wash your bras will always be by hand. Using warm water, fill your sink and add a small amount of hand-washing detergent. Submerge your bra(s) and give it a good swish. Let them soak about 20 minutes, then drain and rinse. If you must use the washing machine, use a lingerie bag. They’ll keep your bras from getting wrapped around other items. Also, fasten hooks to keep them from getting bent the wrong way or snagged. Use your gentle cycle with cold water.
3. How to Dry
In short, never put your bras in the dryer. Sure, you can use the washing machine if you must, but the dryer is a different story. Even on the lowest heat setting, your underwires can get warped and your elastic can be damaged. Your bras will last longer if you gently press out excess water (without wringing) and then lay them flat on a towel or hang them on a hanger to dry. However, don’t hang by the straps…the weight of that wet fabric can stretch them out.
4. Use Delicate Detergent
Regular detergents can break down the fibers in your bras and affect your elasticity. Use something that’s made for delicates.
