Aside from keeping them stain-free, we all want our whites to be their brightest. But even for the most domestic among us, it’s tough to keep them looking that way. Bleach is certainly an alternative, but you can’t use it on everything, and many people would rather not use those potent chemicals. If this describes you, don’t worry! Here is how to naturally whiten white clothes — no harsh stuff necessary.
How To Naturally Whiten White Clothes
The Recipe
Actually, this natural alternative to bleach can hardly be called a recipe. In fact, there’s a high probability that you won’t even have to run to the store. All you need is water, lemon juice, and hydrogen peroxide.
The Ratio
Simply stir together 12 cups of water, 1/4 cup lemon juice, and 1 cup hydrogen peroxide. Use a large jar or other container with a secure lid, because this stuff will be just too handy not to keep around in your laundry room. If you like, you can also pour some into a spray bottle and use it as a pre-treating solution for those pesky stains. Beware, however, that the peroxide will likely remove color, so only use it on your whites.
The Results
To use this whitening solution in your washing machine, add 2 cups to the load, along with your regular detergent. It always helps to use a soak cycle, if you have one. Let your washer agitate, then soak for an hour or so before running a quick or regular whites cycle, if possible. Chances are, your whites — be they linens, socks, or (ahem) unmentionables, should come out looking better than ever. Mine did!
