10 Abandoned Spaces That Are Perfect for Storage

Everyone could use more storage space. It doesn’t matter how big or small your home is — if you can squeeze in extra storage, it’s a win. We all store things in the garage, in closets, even under the bed. But here are 10 oft-abandoned storage spots in your home that you might be overlooking.

1. Under the Stairs

You might have a closet that goes under your stairs. But even if you do, chances are, there is a better way you could be using it.

2. Under Base Cabinets

Why not install some shallow drawers under your base cabinets? Usually, that space is wasted — but it doesn’t have to be. Use these drawers for cookie sheets, serving platters, or dish towels.

3. Above & Around the Toilet

Shelves around and above your toilet can keep essentials organized and in reach.

4. Near the Entry

A simple rack of hooks and a bench can turn your entry way into a place to keep coats, purses, and keys.

Before & After

5. Above the Car

Overhead storage racks are changing the way you store stuff in your garage.

6. Small Walls

Even small slivers of walls can be used for big storage. Create a command center for mail, a bulletin board, or file system.

7. Behind Doors

Hooks, shoe racks, and even towel bars turn the back of any door into a storage area for clothing, toiletries, jewelry, and more.

8. Higher Spaces

How much space just under your ceilings is actually being used? Don’t be afraid to install shelves or take cabinets all the way up. Use these higher spaces for things you don’t use often, and keep a stool nearby.

9. Your Kitchen Island

You probably keep stuff IN your island, but what about ON it? Look at these creative ideas for island storage.

10. Under the Sink

Everyone stores stuff under the kitchen sink, but how much space are you wasting? Pullout shelves and baskets can maximize your storage and keep things neat.
