Before you even start to organize your closet, you need to declutter. That means getting rid of all the clothes you don’t like, don’t wear, or any that don’t fit. If needed, give yourself a few weeks to do this, keeping careful track of what you do and don’t wear. Take all the unused or unwanted clothes and recycle or donate them.
Once you’ve thinned out your closet, the next step is to buy (or make) storage devices. Invest in bins, drawers, wire racks, and other storage devices to help keep things organized. The more compartments you have (instead of just throwing clothes around), the more organized you’ll be.
Now make sure that you’re using all the space available without making it look cluttered and messy. That means storing up high and down low, not just as your eye and arm level. Store heavier things on the floor (like stored seasonal clothes), and lighter things up top. Your most used items should be right at arm level, and your less used (but still used) items should go up or down and be neatly organized.

Next, to keep things continually organized and clean, invest in garment bags if necessary. Get one for your fancy clothes (like a suit or nice dress) so that it doesn’t get random fibers and dust on it. Also, if you have a coat, sweater, or shirt that likes to shed, a garment bag will keep it in better condition and also prevent its fur from getting all over your other clothes.
