You’re already busy, and cleaning everything in your house probably isn’t your idea of a good time. Sadly, some spots or items in your home are more difficult (or more vital) to clean than others. The trouble is, a lot of them are things you don’t necessarily think to clean that often. Let’s take a look at a few of these sneaky dirt and germ collectors, and how you can keep them in check.
1. The Ceiling Fan
Chances are, you look up at your fan once in a while and notice how dusty the blades are. Luckily, there’s an easy solution for that. Just make sure nobody can come by and turn on the switch while you’re working — we don’t want you getting hurt. All you need to clean it without getting dust everywhere is an old pillowcase.
2. Your Garbage Disposal
Ever walk by your sink and notice a funky smell? It’s probably your garbage disposal. You can safely clean and deodorize it with borax and hot water. Pour about 3 Tb of it right into the drain and let it sit for about an hour. Then, flush it with your hottest tap water. If you still have a stink, freeze a 50/50 solution of vinegar into ice cubes, toss them down, then run on your disposal. The ice will help loosen any smelly grease deposits.
3. Blinds
It doesn’t matter if your blinds are wood, faux wood, or metal; they are notorious for being a pain to clean. To make it easier, grab some cheap white gloves (like the stretchy ones you find for a buck). Slip a glove on and dip the fingers into a 50/50 vinegar and water solution, then run your fingers between the slats. When your water solution gets dirty, change it out. You can keep the other glove for your next cleaning, and you can wash them between uses. To repel future dust, rub each slat with a dryer sheet after cleaning.
4. The Remote
Your remote probably gets used a lot by everyone in the family. Because of that, it’s a great depository for germs and sicknesses. Yuck! About once a week, you can clean your remote of dust by using a can of compressed air around all the buttons. But to remove germs, use a disinfecting wipe. While you’re at it, give your phones, keyboards, and game controllers the same treatment. If someone is sick, clean it super frequently. There’s a deep cleaning method, too.
5. Mattress
Sure, you can’t throw it in your washing machine, but you can clean and disinfect your mattress. It begins with your vacuum cleaner and ends with an antibacterial spray. You’ll want to have some baking soda handy, too.
