Remove Tough Stains from Purses

You probably use your purse every day, and it goes pretty much everywhere with you: the car, the office, the bank, restaurants, public restrooms, etc. Your purse really gets around! One of these days it’s bound to wind up with a tough stain, and most purses simply cannot be machine washed. So when you drip sauce onto your favorite bag, you’re going to need a stain removal guide. Ladies, when you need to remove stains from purses, just follow these tips.

1. Patent Leather

If your favorite bag is made from patent leather, try this. Dab a little white vinegar onto some cheesecloth, and then use that to gently rub the stain. This actually works remarkably well most of the time. If some of the stain remains, grab your nail polish remover (the kind with acetone — yes really!). Dab in a cotton swab and then carefully run that over the stain.

If you’ve got a scuff mark, try an eraser or “magic eraser” to rub out the stain, then spray a paper towel with glass cleaner to finish it off.

2. Suede

So, what if you’ve got a suede bag? It’s a different animal from patent leather, but you can still get that stain out. Start by rubbing the area with a dry, soft cloth to clear away any water marks and surface spots that you can. Don’t press hard, as you could damage that classic suede texture. To clear away any dust or dried residue, use a soft brush specifically made for leather.

Due to the absorbency of suede, liquid stains can pose some difficulty. First, try a pencil eraser. If that doesn’t do the job, look for a very fine sandpaper to gently rub the stain. After cleaning, you’ll want to condition the bag with a conditioner formulated for suede, along with a soft cloth.

3. Canvas

It may not seem glamorous, but canvas purses are great for everyday casual use. And if you’re traveling, there’s not much that’s more convenient than a cross-body canvas purse. Most canvas purses are machine washable — but you might need to remove the straps. At the very least, you should be able to spot clean them with your favorite stain remover for fabrics. Check your tag for specific instructions.
