Tile is an ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, or any other area subject to moisture. Installed properly, it will look great for many years to come. If tile has a drawback, it’s the cleaning. The tiles themselves are usually pretty easy to clean, but the grout can be another story — especially if yours is a light color. Here’s how to make your own DIY grout cleaner that will make yours look new again in no time.
1. Gather Household Ingredients
You probably already have all the ingredients you need to make this grout cleaner in your cupboards or medicine cabinet. All you’re going to grab is 1/2 cup baking soda, 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent, and 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide provides whitening, and the baking soda and soap help to scrub away stains.
2. Mix it Up
Grab a little bowl and mix your ingredients into kind of a slurry. Once mixed, pour it into a squeeze bottle. A jar will work fine too.
3. Scrub, Rinse & Repeat if Needed
Squeeze or scoop some of your mixture onto a sponge and go to town on your grout. You should see it begin to whiten and clean up right before your eyes. Don’t add any water at this point. If a sponge isn’t cutting it, try an old toothbrush instead.
At this point, your grout probably looks a lot better. If you’ve got an especially tough case on your hands, simply repeat this process and make more cleaner if you need to. When you’re happy with the look, grab a damp sponge and wipe away any excess cleaner. Store your cleaner in an airtight container.
