When storing vegetables in the fridge, remember that they like high humidity. If your drawers have labels, put veggies in the drawer labeled “high humidity.” It will make the stay fresher longer.
Fruit, on the other hand, like the opposite. They like to have low humidity. Like the opposite of vegetables, store them in the drawer that says “low humidity.”
In nearly all cases, you don’t want to wash your produce until you’re ready to eat it. Water can promote mold and bacteria growth on your produce, making them unhealthy, and decreasing their life span.
Whatever you do, don’t store fruits and veggies together. Fruit gives off ethylene, which promotes ripening. While this can be good for other fruit, it can wreak havoc on your veggies!
If you DO want to use ethylene to your advantage, store your fruit with bananas, which emit a lot of it. This will promote ripening and get underage fruit ready to eat much quicker.
If your bags don’t already have little holes, then make sure you make them. Your produce needs good air flow in order to last the longest, so give them air!
You should also consider trimming extra leaves and longer stems so that you have just the essential part of the produce. This can help them stay fresher longer and last for even more time.
You usually want to pack your veggies apart from each other; don’t cram them together. If they’re too close, they’ll rot faster than if they had some air.
Know which produce needs to be refrigerated and which ones don’t. For example, tomatoes, mangoes, and apples can stay on the counter. However, bell peppers, grapes, and all citrus should be placed in the fridge.
For the produce you do keep out, consider making an artistic display out of it. Why not? You’ll be able to store your produce in open sight without it looking ugly and cluttered.
I love this idea! For your cut up veggies and produce, use cleaned tupperware containers (or something similar) to keep them organized!
Whatever you do, do NOT store produce on the top of your fridge. It may seem like a convenient place, but the heat from the fridge will destroy any produce you put up there. Plus, doesn’t it always seem to get so dusty?
I love the idea of using a rolling cart in your kitchen. It makes your produce so much more accessible and doesn’t get in your way!
Consider using vertical storage to keep your produce nice and organized. You can hang a basket or use shelves on the wall for this type of storage!
