Most of us have a few extra hangers around. Chances are, if you went on a decluttering spree of your family’s closets and your laundry area, you’d dig up quite a few. And even if you don’t, you can easily procure some for cheap. Head to your local dollar store, or tell store clerks you’d like to keep the hangers when you buy clothes. Why would you want all those extra hangers around? Turns out they’re pretty handy for all kinds of things not related to hanging clothes. Here are some handy hacks for extra hangers.
1. DIY Magazine Rack
Whether you’re saving your spot in a magazine or newspaper, or you just need someplace to stash them, flop them over a hanger. Heck, this is the perfect way to keep reading materials in your bathroom (you know you want to). Install a hook next to the commode and hang them right there. And if you want to keep several magazines there, connect hangers by putting a soda can tab over the hook, and then hooking another hanger into that second hole. Your hangers and newspapers will be neatly cascaded. Call it whatever you want, but this is winning at life.
2. Jewelry Storage
Necklaces getting tangled? Bracelets in a big pile? Grab a wooden hanger and screw some small cup hooks into the bottom. Then you can hang several necklaces or bracelets on a single hanger. It’ll be pretty enough to hang right on a wall — especially if you glam up the hanger with some paint or washi tape.
3. Banana Holder
The great thing about a thick wire hanger is that it’s sturdy, but can still be bent into something else that’s useful. For example, with a good wire hanger, you can make your own banana stand. Start by bending the long, bottom portion to make an angle. See where this is going? Finish it off by bending the hook backwards.
4. Paper Towel Rack
Use a plastic hanger to hold paper towels in a pinch — or in your RV. Cut through the center of the long edge of a plastic hanger, and you’ll be able to loop both sides through either side of a roll of paper towels. Then simply hang it over a cabinet knob. When picnicking or camping, hang it on a tree branch or the awning of your RV. This is a great use for those dollar store plastic hangers.
5. Kitchen Helper
You know those plastic hangers with clips them? Well, this kind of hanger is mighty handy in the kitchen. Print your recipe and use the clips to hold the paper. Then hang the hook over a cabinet knob. Your recipe will be easy to read and won’t get messed up.
