Cleaning The Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposal work hard for us, but we often neglect them in return. We tend to forget about cleaning it until it smells nasty! The garbage disposal should really be cleaned on a regular basis–monthly is a good rule of thumb. Fortunately, cleaning it is easy with DIY garbage disposal cleaning bombs!
How To Make DIY Disposal Cleaning Bombs
You’ll need a few common ingredients to make these cleaning bombs. They shouldn’t be hard to find!
- 2 cups baking soda
- 3 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons dishwashing liquid
- 30 drops of Lemon, Lime or Orange essential oil–or a Citrus Blend
- approximately 1/2 cup water
In a medium bowl, combine the baking soda, salt and dishwashing liquid. Mix until it’s well-combined. Slowly mix in the essential oils. Use your hands to really mix it well–and your hands will smell great afterwards!
Once you’ve mixed in the oils, slowly add the water, a little at a time, until the mixture begins to stick together. You want it wet enough to form balls, but not soggy. Use your hands to roll it into balls about 1.5 inches around. Place your cleaning bombs on a sheet of parchment to dry thoroughly at least overnight, or until they are very firm.
This recipe makes approximately two dozen disposal cleaning bombs. Store them in an airtight container.
How To Use A DIY Disposal Cleaning Bomb
When it’s time to freshen up your garbage disposal, just drop one into the disposal before you turn it on. Run a little cold water down the drain to start the bomb dissolving. Wait a minute, turn the water back on and turn on the disposal for about 30 seconds. Run water through until the foaming stops. If one bomb doesn’t completely vanquish odors, repeat the process once more.
