Never Use Store-Bought Fabric Softener Again!

One of the best and easiest DIY home products you can make is fabric softener. Not only will you save money, but you won’t be adding unnecessary chemicals to every load of laundry. And if you or someone in your family has sensitive skin, you’ll be glad about that. Here are some simple ways to make your own fabric softener, so you can quit buying it altogether if you wish.

Save money on your fabric softener by making it yourself. DIY fabric softener is easy peasy! #organizationjunkieblog #diyfabricsoftener #laundrytips

1. DIY Crystals

This recipe pretty much could not be easier. All you need to is some epsom salt and your favorite kind of essential oil (lavender, lemon, grapefruit, tea tree…). Pour about 4 cups of the salt into a jar and add drops of oil until you like the scent. Start with about 10 drops and go from there. Shake and stir, and add 1/4 cup of the crystals per load.

2. DIY Liquid

To make your own liquid fabric softener, mix 6 ups of water, 3 cups of white vinegar, and 2 cups of hair conditioner — just pick a scent you like. Mix it all up in a gallon-sized bottle. Stir it but don’t shake, or it’ll get all foamy! Use the same amount of this as you’d use in a laid of laundry with the commercially-made stuff.

3. DIY Dryer Sheets

These are easy to make, too! All you need are some scraps of cloth (flannel is a good choice) or old cloth diapers. Then take your favorite essential oils, a big glass jar, and some white vinegar. Stir 1 cup of vinegar with 25 drops of essential oils in whatever combination you want (use more if you like). Fold the cloth scraps and put them in the jar. Pour in the vinegar mixture until the cloths are moist, but not totally saturated. Use one cloth in the dryer with each load. When the load is done, simply put the cloth back in the jar and add a little more of your liquid.
