Granite countertops are popular for a reason. They’re durable, versatile, and they look fantastic. If you want to keep your granite counters looking great for years to come, you need to know how to clean them properly!
1. Use the Right Cleaner
For best results, use a cleaning agent that’s made for granite. You can use this type of cleaner as often as you need to.
2. Make Your Own Cleaner
If you choose to make your own granite cleaner, make sure you use safe and effective ingredients. Don’t use anything too acidic, like vinegar, bleach, or citrus. You also want to avoid using glass cleaner or ammonia. These harsh substances can dull your finish and break down your sealant. However, you can use rubbing alcohol and castile soap.
3. Spray & Wipe
Spray your chosen cleaner onto the countertop and then wipe it down well with a soft cloth, microfiber, or paper towel.
4. Be Proactive
To keep your granite from staining, wipe up any spills as soon as possible. Especially if your countertops are unsealed or it’s been a while since you applied sealant, the natural stone may stain under certain circumstances. There are some ways to remove stains, but you’re better off to avoid them altogether.
5. Don’t Use the Magic Eraser
The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is a great product for cleaning a lot of different things. Sometimes it seems downright miraculous. However, it’s not really the best tool to use on your expensive granite countertops. Why? Because it can actually damage your shiny finish. They’re made of a melamine resin that’s actually an ultra-fine abrasive.
