Chances are, you have at least a couple of plastic cutting boards in your kitchen and use them regularly. They’re handy, inexpensive, and may even be color coded for different uses. Sadly, they are also highly prone to staining, and you have to wonder what bacteria could be living on that surface. Yuck! Here’s an easy way to clean the germs and stains off those  plastic cutting boards, so you can get on with cooking and back to your life.

If you like, you can first try scrubbing with a brush and your regular dish soap, but a lot of people don’t have much luck with this method. If your stain is a bad one, you may be disappointed, too. Surprisingly, even applying hydrogen peroxide and letting it soak in for 15-20 minutes doesn’t always do the trick. Who’d have thought?

No, if you really want to get that cutting board squeaky clean with the least amount of effort, you might just want to go straight for the bleach!

Step 1: Fill Your Sink

All you’ll need for this is a cheap bottle of bleach and some hot water. Start by filling your sink with the hottest water your tap can put out — approximately a gallon, but really just enough to cover your cutting board is all that’s needed.

Step 2: Pour in Some Bleach

Add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup plain bleach and stir it around a bit with your cutting board or a spoon.

Step 3: Let it Soak

Let your cutting board sit in the bleach solution for about 20 minutes. Be careful to avoid splashing yourself when putting it in. If you have more than one board to clean, feel free to add them as long as your solution is deep enough. You might want to switch them around a couple of times during the soak.

Step 4: Rinse Well

Your cutting boards should now be stain and bacteria free! Give them a good rinse to eliminate any bleach reside and odor. You might want to let them air dry to further dissipate the smell of the bleach. You can now cut, slice, and dice with ultimate confidence.
