Even if your mudroom, entry or hallway doesn’t have room for a coat closet, you can make do by designating a spot for some coat hooks. Depending on the size of your family, this can be a small corner or an entire wall, but hooks for hanging coats, jackets and bags are a necessity.

Even if the only spot you have is an outdoor porch or alcove, you will cut down on so much mess by corralling all the boots and shoes that walk in the door each day. During the winter months, it’s especially important and helpful to have boot trays where wet boots can drip dry without mucking up your floors.

Plan a spot for all the hats, scarves and gloves your family wears during the colder months. If you have hooks for them, great. If not, hang some clear plastic bags from hooks, and designate one for scarves and one for gloves. This helps prevent them from getting lost quite so easily. It’s also important to have a spot for wallets, keys and sunglasses. This is called a drop zone, and it can be as simple as a decorative tray on top of an entryway table.

If you’re lucky enough to have a large  mudroom area in your home, think about building an organizer wall with cubbies. It works wonders for organizing all the stuff kids bring in, especially backpacks, bags, and sports equipment. Another idea is to search out a set of vintage lockers and install them in your mudroom for kid storage. The advantage of something like this is the ability to have everything hidden away.

I love this idea of combing your mudroom with the laundry. When the kids come in from outside, their dirty stuff can just be dropped off in the laundry baskets. Makes sense, right? Having a sink also adds to the experience because the kids can wash up. I would love it for when I come in from gardening.
